I though that the film ‘Once Were Warriors’ was full of violence, torture, unhapiness and anger. The film tells the story of a mother named Beth, who regularly gets beaten up and abused by her so called loving husband Jakey, who leaves her with black eyes, feeling scared and unhappy. The film was set in New Zealand and demonstrates poverty, for example when Jakey lost his job, his wife was concerned and believed that they were going to lose their home. I didn’t enjoy watching the film due to the violence throughout. Cigarettes, alcohol and violence all work together to create the theme of the film. One minute the family are happy and loving, everytime Jakey comes in drunk and beats up Beth – everything changes. When the family took a trip to see their son/brother the family grew closer together. The Father, Jakey was brought up by slaves, making the things he does seem right. Beth started hating Jakey and practically told him she’s fed up with him and the way he has his friends in their family home. Grace got really upset when she got raped by her uncle, as so turned to drugs along with her best friend. Jakey got angry with Grace, his daughter, when she refused to kiss her uncle, Grace then hung herself on the tree outside their family home. Jakey got very upset and turned to alcohol, he then tried cutting the tree down. In the end the son who got sent to the care place then ended up taking on the role of his father, helping his mother to look after the three children.
